Last year for the Fourth of July we hosted a get-together for our friends and family. I made three different types of veggie burgers and a new food format was born: The Veggie Burger Tasting Party!
This year, the party has expanded to include the friends and family of our neighbors, who happen to very close friends as well. I'm really excited, and nervous too, about sharing my plant-strong ways with a whole new crowd of people, but YOLO!
That's "you only live once" for us old folks.
So here's what I've decided to do: I'm preparing a variety of homemade veggie burgers (5 kinds) and all the fixin's. I've asked the guests to bring any side dish they would like--bean, grain or veggie.
I've also been dying to try The Healthy Librarian's "Enlightened" Version of Chloe's Warm Spinach-Artichoke Dip ever since I saw Debby blog about it. So that's going on my "must make" list. I've also asked one SIL to bring her killer corn and black bean dip and a seven layer dip (not vegan, not oil-free, but guaranteed crowd pleasers).
I've chosen five new veggie burger recipes to try. I might be overly ambitious, but that's so my style! I purchased The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet cookbook last year for just this occasion, so you'd better believe I'm going to go to town. All of the recipes are Vegan and easily adaptable to be no-oil. The author provides tons of serving suggestions and tons of gorgeous photos. And most of the ingredients are things that I already have in my plant-strong pantry, fridge or freezer. It's an amazing book.
The five burgers I chose for the party are:
Sun-Dried Tomato and Artichoke Burger (mushrooms, onions, garlic, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, nutritional yeast, oats, brown rice)
Sunday Afternoon Grillers (TVP, mushrooms, onion, garlic, vital wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, tamari, tomato paste, scallion)
Ortega Burger (TVP, taco seasoning, vital wheat gluten, salsa, hot sauce)
Pintos and Rice Burger (pinto beans, brown rice, tomato, onion, cornmeal, flour, jalapeno pepper, garlic, hot sauce, cumin)
Earth Burger (mushrooms, garlic, wild rice blend, corn, broccoli, vital wheat gluten, soy flour)
Whole wheat hamburger buns
Grilled red onions
Susan Voisen's (Fat Free Vegan) Tofu-Cashew Mayonnaise
No-oil Thousand Island Dressing, get the recipe here!
a variety of mustards
And last but not least, something sweet for dessert! I've had this recipe in my stack of recipes I would love to try someday, I don't know when, and the stack keeps growing everyday: Emily Segal from Triumph Wellness' Vegan Peanut Butter Puffed Rice Bars.
